SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday instructed the Power Development Department to enforce strict safety protocols for field staff and work towards achieving “zero casualty” among linemen while on duty.

The chief minister issued the directive while addressing the ‘Lineman Diwas’ event organised by the Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited (JPDCL), where the role of linemen in maintaining electricity supply across the region was recognised.

Abdullah said the government, along with the power department, would prioritise the safety and welfare of linemen who are engaged in maintaining power infrastructure, often under challenging conditions.

Highlighting the importance of electricity in daily governance and public services, the chief minister said sectors such as healthcare, education and irrigation depend heavily on uninterrupted power supply. He noted that linemen form the backbone of the power department and ensure the smooth functioning of these services.

He praised their efforts during emergencies and natural disasters, including Operation Sindoor and the floods of 2025, stating that linemen often work in adverse conditions to restore electricity.

The chief minister emphasised that ensuring safety goes beyond procuring protective equipment and requires proper distribution of gear to field staff along with adequate training in its use. He also directed senior engineers and officers to strictly enforce safety protocols and standard operating procedures during field operations.

During the event, 20 linemen were honoured with certificates and mementoes for their service. Abdullah also suggested introducing cash rewards in future editions of Lineman Diwas to further recognise their contributions.

JPDCL Managing Director Gurpal Singh said the corporation currently provides electricity to more than 12 lakh consumers across the Jammu region.
