A Pakistani national was apprehended by security forces near Simari village in the Karnah sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district after he allegedly crossed the Line of Control (LoC) under suspicious circumstances, officials said on Saturday.

According to the Indian Army, the individual was detained during a joint operation conducted by Army troops and the Jammu and Kashmir Police on June 12 following specific intelligence inputs.

“Based on specific intelligence input, alert troops, in a joint operation with Jammu and Kashmir Police, apprehended a Pakistani national near Simari village in Karnah sector of Kupwara who had crossed the Line of Control under suspicious circumstances,” the Army said in a statement.

The Army said the joint team acted swiftly and intercepted the intruder before any potential security breach could occur.

The apprehended individual is currently in custody and is being questioned by investigating agencies.

“A detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his crossing into this side of the Line of Control and to determine whether he had any links or specific motives behind the intrusion,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer told Greater Kashmir that investigations were underway to determine how the intruder managed to cross the border fence and enter the area.

Officials said security agencies are examining all aspects of the incident and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
