Srinagar: The National Conference (NC) on Friday established a commanding lead in Jammu and Kashmir’s representation in the Rajya Sabha by winning three of the four seats up for election, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) succeeded in claiming one seat in a contest that remained competitive until the final count.
NC candidates Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, and Gurwinder Singh Oberoi aka Shammi Oberoi, secured clear victories backed by support from the Congress, PDP, CPI(M), AIP, and several independent legislators. BJP’s Sat Sharma, who had been involved in a keenly watched head-to-head for the final seat, ultimately prevailed through a cohesive voting bloc within his party.
The race for the fourth seat remained unpredictable through multiple rounds of counting, with both NC and BJP asserting confidence in their numerical advantage with latter however prevailing towards the end.
Notably, this marked the first Rajya Sabha election held in Jammu and Kashmir since the reorganization of the erstwhile state and the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.
