SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Tuesday strongly criticized the National Conference (NC)-led government in Jammu and Kashmir over its decision to remove Urdu from the mandatory eligibility criteria for the Tehsildar examination.

Calling the move an attack on the region’s cultural and linguistic identity, Iltija said the government was targeting the language and heritage of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

She demanded an immediate rollback of the order, asserting that excluding Urdu from the examination requirements was a direct assault on the identity of the people.

Mufti alleged that the decision was an attempt to erase Urdu from Jammu and Kashmir’s administrative framework and questioned the government’s intent behind altering the long-standing requirement.

Recently, the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) has officially removed the requirement of Urdu language proficiency for recruitment to the posts of Naib Tehsildar and Patwari.
