SRINAGAR: Police in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday arrested two alleged drug peddlers in separate operations and recovered narcotic substances, officials said.

In the first action, a police party from Police Post Sherbagh intercepted a suspect during naka checking at Sarnal near Pehru Crossing. On search, officers recovered approximately 1.198 kilograms of charas powder from his possession. The accused has been identified as Shahid Rafiq Nanda, a resident of Nandpora, Anantnag.

In this regard, FIR No. 179/2026 under Section 8/20 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Anantnag, and investigation has been initiated.

In a second operation, Police Station Bijbehara apprehended another alleged drug peddler during naka checking at Kerikadal. The accused, identified as Mohd Shafi Lone of K. Kalan, Bijbehara, was allegedly found in possession of 56 grams of a charas-like substance along with Rs 6,000 in cash, believed to be proceeds of narcotics trade.

Accordingly, FIR No. 162/2026 under Sections 8/29 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Bijbehara, and further investigation is underway.

Police said efforts to curb drug trafficking in the district will continue and urged the public to share information on narcotics-related activities to assist enforcement agencies.
