Srinagar, May 28: The United States and Iran have agreed on a framework deal for a 60-day ceasefire extension and fresh negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear programme, though the proposal is still awaiting final approval from US President Donald Trump and Iranian leadership, according to AFP and other media reports.

Sources told AFP that both sides had broadly agreed to extend the ceasefire and initiate negotiations over Iran’s nuclear activities, while details of the memorandum of understanding were still being finalised.

According to an Axios report, President Trump has been briefed on the proposed arrangement but has not yet approved it, reportedly saying he wanted “a couple of days” to consider the terms before taking a final decision. Iranian authorities have also not formally endorsed the framework so far.

Reports said the proposed agreement would ensure uninterrupted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital global oil route. Iran would reportedly be required to remove naval mines from the waterway within 30 days and refrain from interfering with maritime traffic, while the US is expected to ease certain sanctions and allow limited Iranian oil exports during the ceasefire period.

The framework also reportedly includes Iran’s commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons. During the proposed 60-day ceasefire period, both countries are expected to negotiate the future of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile and enrichment activities.

The proposed deal would also reportedly include discussions on frozen Iranian funds and broader sanctions relief as part of future negotiations.

The development comes amid continuing tensions in the Gulf region despite ongoing diplomatic efforts following recent military exchanges involving US and Iranian-linked forces.
