Ramban, Jan 22: The Srinagar–Jammu National Highway (NH-44) remained open for two-way traffic on Thursday, allowing light, medium, and heavy vehicles to move, though authorities warned commuters to exercise caution amid forecasts of snowfall and rainfall over the coming days, traffic official said.

Authorities stated that, subject to fair weather and favourable road conditions, the highway is likely to remain open for two-way movement on Friday as well. However, in view of an inclement weather forecast issued by the Meteorological Department predicting a spell of snowfall and rainfall over the next few days, commuters have been advised to exercise caution.

People planning to travel have been urged to confirm the road status from Traffic Control Units (TCUs) at Srinagar, Ramban, or Jammu, and to stay updated through the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police’s official Twitter handle and Facebook page. Passenger vehicle operators and light motor vehicle (LMV) drivers have been advised to prefer daytime travel on the Jammu–Srinagar stretch of the highway.

Night travel has been discouraged due to the risk of shooting stones and landslides, particularly in areas between Ramban and Banihal, where ongoing construction work may also cause inconvenience to commuters.

Traffic movement earlier in the day was reported to be slow at several stretches owing to narrow single-lane roads. Heavy congestion was witnessed at Balli Nullah, Dewal, Nashri–Dalwas, Maroog, and Kishtwari Pather, located between Udhampur and Banihal. The situation was further aggravated by the breakdown of three heavy vehicles at different locations, resulting in prolonged delays.

Despite these challenges, hundreds of vehicles ranging from light to heavy successfully crossed the Chenani–Nashri and Banihal–Qazigund tunnels late Thursday evening, officials monitoring traffic in Ramban district said.

Traffic authorities have once again appealed to commuters to strictly follow lane discipline, avoid overtaking and wrong-lane driving, and adhere to traffic regulations, warning that violations often lead to congestion and delays.

Commuters have been advised to remain alert and check the latest traffic advisories before commencing their journey to ensure safe and smooth travel along this vital highway.
