SRINAGAR: Police in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday suspended an Investigating Officer for alleged procedural lapses during the investigation into the vandalisation of Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag last week, officials said.

According to police, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anantnag Amod Ashok Nagpure ordered the suspension after the officer failed to comply with mandatory arrest procedures in FIR No. 118/2026 registered at Police Station Anantnag. The action was taken after the lapse came to light during the investigation process.

Anantnag Police, in a post on X, said strict action was initiated as the Investigating Officer did not follow required legal procedures while handling the case, adding that the force remains committed to due process.

The case pertains to vandalisation and alleged assault on medical staff at GMC Anantnag following the death of a woman in a suspected case of medical negligence. Police said four individuals were arrested in connection with the incident but were later released on bail due to lack of evidence.

The deceased woman, a resident of Srigufwara in Bijbehara, had reportedly suffered cardiac arrest. Doctors said she was resuscitated on arrival at the hospital but later succumbed to her condition.

Following her death, her attendants allegedly vandalised hospital property and assaulted doctors, prompting protests by the medical staff who termed the incident as “hooliganism” and demanded strict action.

Police said the investigation is continuing, while reiterating their commitment to ensuring accountability and adherence to legal procedures in all cases.
