Srinagar, June 11: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday said Jammu and Kashmir is steadily building a strong ecosystem for hockey, expressing confidence that the Union Territory will emerge as a hub of sporting talent in the coming years.
Addressing the valedictory function of the Alfa Hockey Inter-School Tournament 2026 at the Synthetic Hockey Astro Turf in Srinagar’s Polo Ground, the Lieutenant Governor said the government is focused on creating a structured pathway for young athletes through improved infrastructure, coaching and competitive opportunities.
He said sporting events at the grassroots level play a crucial role in discovering hidden talent and providing young players with the exposure needed to excel.
“Many outstanding players come from ordinary backgrounds, but without opportunities and proper support, talent cannot progress. This tournament is helping identify such talent and enabling young sportspersons to move ahead,” Sinha said.
The Lieutenant Governor said that the enthusiasm and skill displayed by participants during the tournament reflected the vast sporting potential present across Jammu and Kashmir. He said the administration, through the Sports Department and J&K Sports Council, is committed to ensuring that talented athletes receive the support needed to compete at higher levels.
Urging young players to remain focused on their goals, Sinha said success in sports demands discipline, perseverance and a willingness to continuously improve.
“Your coaches understand your strengths and shortcomings. There is always scope for improvement. Stay committed to learning and keep working on your game,” he told the participants.
The Lieutenant Governor also encouraged budding athletes to learn from accomplished sportspersons and draw inspiration from their journeys.
Highlighting the transformative role of sports in society, he said games not only promote physical fitness but also help shape character, leadership and a sense of responsibility among youth.
Expressing optimism about the future of hockey in the Union Territory, Sinha said the efforts being made today would lay the foundation for producing national and international-level players in the years ahead.
“Hockey can become a major avenue for our youth. I am confident that more players will emerge from Jammu and Kashmir, and this tournament will mark the beginning of a new journey for the sport in the Union Territory,” he added.
