SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday paid tribute to veteran leader Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg on his 44th death anniversary, describing him as one of the principal architects of modern Jammu and Kashmir whose contributions continue to inspire generations.

Remembering Afzal Beg’s role in shaping the region’s political and socio-economic landscape, Mufti said he was a visionary statesman, reformer and champion of social justice whose commitment to the welfare of ordinary people left a lasting impact on Jammu and Kashmir.

In a statement, she highlighted his role as the first Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the architect of the Big Landed Estates Abolition Act of 1950, a landmark land reform measure that sought to empower marginalised sections of society and reshape land ownership patterns in the region.

“Mirza Afzal Beg Sahib was not merely a politician but a beacon of hope and dignity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. His foresight, integrity and unwavering commitment to justice transformed lives and laid the foundation for a more equitable society,” Mufti said.

She said Afzal Beg’s life and work continue to serve as a source of inspiration for those committed to democratic values, public welfare and social justice.

Mufti further stated that his legacy remains relevant in efforts to promote dignity, justice and empowerment, adding that his contributions continue to guide those working for the welfare of the people.

Former minister and PDP chief spokesperson Mehboob Beg, son of the late leader, along with other party leaders, also paid tributes, recalling Afzal Beg’s long record of public service and advocacy.

The PDP urged people across Jammu and Kashmir to reflect on Afzal Beg’s ideals of equity, empowerment and public service, stating that his vision remains significant in fostering peace, progress and unity in the region.
