SRINAGAR: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch Jammu and Kashmir has arrested a Health Department official in connection with a forgery and illegal appointment case registered in 2017.
The accused, Shahnawaz Ahmad Mir, a Senior Assistant posted in the Health Department and resident of Tankipora Shaheed Gunj, Srinagar, was taken into custody following searches conducted in FIR No. 19/2017 registered under Sections 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the Ranbir Penal Code at Police Station Crime Branch Kashmir (now EOW Kashmir). Officials described him as a habitual offender allegedly involved in multiple similar cases.
According to officials, the case was initiated after a communication from the Deputy Director Health Services Kashmir flagged that Bashir Ahmad Sofi of Mazhama, Budgam, had obtained appointment as a Health Educator through fraudulent means. He is accused of submitting forged transfer orders and a fabricated Last Pay Certificate.
Investigations revealed that the accused had unlawfully joined service at Block Sheeri in Baramulla and drew salary, resulting in a wrongful loss to the state exchequer.
Officials further stated that the role of Shahnawaz Ahmad Mir has surfaced in several similar cases, which are either under investigation or have already been charge-sheeted.
Further investigation into the matter is ongoing to establish the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify additional links, officials said.
