Abdul Ahad Azad Memorial Degree College celebrates World Environment Day

Abdul Ahad Azad Memorial Degree College, Bemina celebrated World Environment Day on Friday. The program started with a formal welcome address by the principal of the college Prof. Muzaffar Ahmad Bhat.

In his address, he underscored the need to be active agents of environmental sustainability.

He said “erratic weather patterns, shrinking glaciers and rising temperatures are clear signs of climate change” and that these pose an imminent threat to humanity unless we remodel ourselves towards green and sustainable initiatives. He presented a plant sapling to the chief guest of the function Vasu Yadav- IFS & Director DEERS J&K.

The event saw two students of the college delivering talks on the theme of this year’s World Environment Day which is Inspired by Nature- For Climate. For Our Future. Dr Majid Farooq- a scientist at DEERS J&K- delivered a comprehensive presentation and dovetailed many notions in pressing his point.

He said there has been a gradual increase in average temperatures especially over the last two decades with J&K being no alien to such disastrous onslaught. “Glacial meltdown due to rising temperatures has led to flood damage, soil erosion and the same is visibly seen everywhere”. The number of ‘frost days’ has shrunk and the cultivability of land has reduced over the years, he further added. He said “we are beginning to live on ecological debt as the liabilities are far greater than the environmental assets we have”.

The chief guest Vasu Yadav said the celebration of the day should instil a sense of responsibility amongst us all. He said “we seem to be well aware about the hazards of environmental degradation but it is the lack of action where we lag behind”. He further said humankind needs to change its behavioural pattern to safeguard environment from being crusaded upon.
