SRINAGAR: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday criticised the Centre after former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah was reportedly stopped from meeting AAP MP Sanjay Singh in Srinagar.
Singh, who had travelled to the Union Territory to protest the detention of AAP MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA), said he was placed under house arrest by local police. Visuals shared on social media showed Abdullah being prevented from entering a government guest house to meet him.
Kejriwal, in a post on X, questioned the decision. “The former Chief Minister, who is the father of the current Chief Minister, is not being allowed to meet Sanjay Singh in his own state?” he wrote, calling the act one that “requires scrutiny in a democratic framework.”
Singh also issued a statement on social media, saying Abdullah had come to express solidarity but was stopped. He questioned the basis of his detention, reiterating that he had travelled to Srinagar for a peaceful protest against Malik’s arrest.
Abdullah, while speaking briefly to the media, confirmed he was not allowed to meet Singh and termed the restrictions “unnecessary.” He criticised both the restraint placed on Singh and the use of the PSA against Malik.
There has been no official response so far from the Jammu and Kashmir administration on the incident. The episode comes amid intensifying political debate over the use of preventive detention laws in the region.
AAP has demanded Malik’s immediate release and said it will continue to challenge both his detention and Singh’s restraint through legal and political means. (KNS)
