SRINAGAR: A search operation to trace suspected militants hiding in the dense forests of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district entered its sixth consecutive day on Thursday, officials said.

The joint operation, involving the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was launched on Saturday following specific intelligence inputs regarding militant movement in the area. The operation has been codenamed ‘Operation Sheruwali’.

Officials said an encounter had broken out between security forces and suspected militants in the Dorimal–Gambhir Moghla belt shortly after the operation was launched.

In a post on X, the Army’s White Knight Corps said contact was established with terrorists at around 11:30 am on Saturday in the Gambhir Moghla area during the intelligence-based joint operation carried out with the police and CRPF.

According to preliminary inputs, two to three militants are believed to be present in the area. Officials said a tight cordon has been maintained and extensive surveillance measures have been put in place to prevent their escape.

The search operation remains underway, and further details are awaited.
