SRINAGAR: A political controversy has emerged in Jammu and Kashmir after the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) cited information obtained through the Right to Information (RTI) Act, alleging procedural irregularities during the recent Rajya Sabha elections in the Union Territory.

According to the JKNC, the RTI response indicates that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) did not appoint a chief polling agent to oversee the voting process during the elections. The National Conference stated that such agents are responsible for monitoring polling and ensuring transparency and accountability on behalf of political parties.

The JKNC has linked this development to the outcome of the election in which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a Rajya Sabha seat despite lacking a numerical majority on paper. The party has claimed that the RTI disclosure raises questions about the voting pattern that led to the result.

A JKNC spokesperson said the information obtained through RTI, rather than political allegations, has brought clarity on how the BJP managed to secure the seat.

The party further criticised what it termed contradictory political positions, alleging a gap between public statements and internal political actions by some parties. It also referred to past political alignments in the region.

The Peoples Democratic Party has not issued a detailed response to the allegations so far.
