SRINAGAR: On the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday dedicated the Tawi Riverfront Project (Phase-I), developed at a cost of Rs 156 crore, to the public.
The project, executed by Jammu Smart City Limited, includes promenades on the left bank, right bank, and central island of the Tawi River, creating four continuous stretches for walking, jogging, and cycling. A dedicated ghat has also been developed for the traditional Tawi Aarti.
“Our vision is to create inclusive, accessible, and enriching spaces for every citizen. The Tawi Riverfront embodies this ethos with a seamless blend of tradition and modernity, where development harmonises with nature,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
He was attending the three-day Tawi Mahotsav organised by Jammu Smart City Limited, where he participated in the Tawi Aarti and launched multiple urban development initiatives aimed at enhancing the riverfront and surrounding areas.
During the event, the Lieutenant Governor laid the foundation stone for a four-lane connecting road with a bridge to the right bank, designed to ease congestion and directly connect Bhagwati Nagar rotary with Jewel Chowk.
He also launched the development of green spaces along the top promenade of the left bank. The one-kilometre stretch is expected to transform the riverfront into a major urban recreational space for residents and tourists.
The Lieutenant Governor said that under the Urban Challenge Fund, two major projects have been initiated, including the real estate monetisation of Phase-I and the extension of the riverfront from Bikram Chowk Bridge to Har Ki Pauri. He said these initiatives will help transform the Tawi Riverfront into a key tourist destination, recreational hub, and economic centre.
Emphasising Jammu’s cultural heritage, the Lieutenant Governor said that cities along rivers preserve timeless values and traditions. He described Jammu as a historic centre of spirituality and culture enriched over centuries by saints, philosophers, and artists.
He added that efforts over the past several years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership have aimed at enhancing Jammu’s cultural identity and development.
The Lieutenant Governor said that true culture is sustained when its values are passed on to future generations, adding that development should reflect service to society.
On the occasion, he administered the Anti-Drug Pledge to citizens and felicitated winners of the traditional dangal.
The event was attended by Member of Parliament Jugal Kishore Sharma, MP and BJP JK President Sat Sharma, Minister Satish Sharma, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, senior administrative and police officers, MLAs, religious leaders, and a large number of citizens.
