Srinagar, Feb 24: Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over his proposal to introduce artificial snow at Gulmarg to boost winter tourism, accusing the government of failing to protect the valley’s fragile environment.

Addressing a press conference, BJP spokesperson Abhijeet Jasrotia termed the proposal a “cosmetic measure” and said the administration was ignoring the larger environmental crisis facing Kashmir. “At a time when we need extensive greenery and forest protection, the chief minister talks about fake snow and artificial cooling. These are cosmetic measures and potentially dangerous for sports lovers and the fragile Himalayan ecosystem,” Jasrotia said.

On Monday, Abdullah had advocated the introduction of artificial snow facilities in Gulmarg to strengthen its position as a premier winter sports destination and give a fresh push to tourism. However, the BJP alleged that during the past one-and-a-half years, the government has failed to safeguard the region’s green cover.

“Trees are being cut in the name of development, but there is no serious effort to restore what is being lost. We are gradually losing our natural cooling shield,” Jasrotia said, accusing the government of lacking a clear climate action strategy.

He further alleged that unregulated urban expansion, road widening projects and shrinking orchards were contributing to ecological imbalance in the Valley. According to the BJP, deforestation, wetland degradation and unchecked construction activities have increased under the current administration, which could worsen heatwaves, reduce snowfall and adversely impact tourism and horticulture. “Instead of taking decisive steps to protect Kashmir’s forests and wetlands, the government appears content enjoying the hot seat,” he added.

Calling for wider public participation in environmental conservation, Jasrotia proposed a symbolic plantation campaign. “On Eid, every child should receive a Chinar sapling as Eidee and plant it. This will send a powerful message about preserving our heritage and securing our future,” he said.

The BJP demanded a time-bound afforestation programme, strict audits of development projects involving tree cutting, and urgent revival of wetlands and traditional water bodies. The party warned that failure to act decisively could push Kashmir towards irreversible environmental damage.
