SRINAGAR: Traffic Police Rural Kashmir on Monday issued a travel advisory in view of the prevailing weather conditions and forecasts of heavy rain and snowfall across the Valley, urging commuters, tourists and drivers to remain cautious, particularly while travelling on hilly roads.
According to the advisory, movement on mountainous routes will be allowed strictly in line with prescribed cut-off timings and traffic regulations. Due to snow accumulation on the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway (NH-44) and other high-altitude roads, travellers heading towards Jammu, Qazigund, Gulmarg, Ladakh, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Gurez, Karnah and Machil have been advised to verify road conditions and travel timings with the Traffic Police Control Room (TPCR) Kashmir before starting their journey.
The Traffic Police also directed motorists to ensure that proper anti-skid devices are fitted on their vehicles, warning that no vehicle lacking adequate anti-skid arrangements will be permitted on snowbound roads. These include the Tangmarg–Gulmarg stretch, Kangan–Sonamarg and beyond, Sinthan–Kishtwar road, Pahalgam road, Mughal Road, Kupwara border roads and the Gurez–Bandipora route, if open.
To prevent congestion at designated holding areas, authorities said only registered anti-skid chain vendors will be allowed to install chains at approved locations.
The advisory was issued by Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic Rural Kashmir, Ravinder Pal Singh, who appealed to the public to cooperate with traffic authorities to ensure safe and smooth movement during adverse weather.
Meanwhile, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir from Monday evening, with forecasts indicating rain and snowfall across the region and the possibility of moderate to heavy snow in higher reaches.
