SRINAGAR: At least three shops were robbed during the intervening night at Hijaj Market in Kupwara district of north Kashmir.

According to details available, the affected establishments belong to Muhammad Sadeeq Khan, a meat seller by profession and a resident of Chalgound, Hayhama; Fayaz Ahmed, a cloth merchant from Panzgam; and Ghulam Mohammad Wani, a dry fruit seller residing at Darusalam.

The burglars reportedly struck during late night hours when the market was closed. Shopkeepers on reaching their establishments in the morning found locks broken and goods missing. While the exact value of stolen items was not immediately known, preliminary assessments suggest financial losses to all three traders.

Inhabitants and members of the local traders’ fraternity expressed serious concern over the incident, stating that Hijaj Market remains crowded during the day and serves as a key commercial hub for the surrounding localities.

Police have taken cognizance of the matter and initiated an investigation. A case has been registered, and officials said efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those involved.

CCTV footage from nearby areas is also being examined as part of the probe. [KNT]
