SRINAGAR: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has expressed concern over what it says is a rising atmosphere of harassment faced by students and labourers in different parts of the country following the recent attack in Delhi. In a statement issued in Srinagar, CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami said that while those involved in the “heinous terrorist act” must be brought to justice, innocent citizens must not be subjected to intimidation or suspicion.
Tarigami said the reports emerging from outside Jammu and Kashmir had created fear among young people pursuing their studies across India. He noted that students “should not be dragged into it,” and stressed that the country must ensure a sense of security for them, instead of exposing them to an atmosphere of anxiety or humiliation. According to him, such conditions are neither favourable for academic life nor healthy for the emotional stability of young people who require reassurance and confidence.
The CPI(M) leader also warned that indiscriminate actions in the aftermath of such incidents have historically deepened alienation. He said that while the space for those responsible for terrorist acts must shrink, “pushing innocent people to the wall has never helped achieve anything fruitful,” adding that desperation has always proved counterproductive. Past experiences in conflict situations, he said, have shown that sweeping measures only harm efforts to maintain peace and trust.
The CPI(M) has demanded that there should be no indiscriminate arrests following the Delhi attack and called upon law enforcement agencies to ensure that innocent people—whether students, labourers or ordinary citizens—do not become victims of fear or suspicion. The party said that constructive steps to win over hearts and minds, particularly of the youth, are essential at this time.
