SRINAGAR: The Office of the Principal Census Officer (Urban), Srinagar, and the Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), has appealed to residents of urban Srinagar to actively participate in the Self-Enumeration phase of Census 2027, scheduled from May 17 to 31, 2027.

The initiative marks a shift towards a digital, transparent and citizen-friendly census process, enabling households to independently submit their demographic and housing details through an online portal. Officials said the move is aimed at improving data accuracy, reducing reliance on manual enumeration, and ensuring a more efficient and streamlined exercise.

Authorities have stressed that participation of every household is essential for creating a reliable statistical base to support future planning and development. Residents have been urged to complete the process within the stipulated timeframe and to provide accurate and complete information.

Citizens have also been advised to use the official Census Self-Enumeration Portal and securely retain the generated Self-Enumeration (SE) ID, which will be required during subsequent verification. The office cautioned against delaying participation to avoid last-minute inconvenience and ensure smooth conduct of census operations.

Following the self-enumeration phase, designated census enumerators will carry out field verification visits. Households will be required to present their SE ID during this process, and residents have been requested to extend full cooperation to field staff.

The Office reiterated that the Census plays a vital role in governance, including policy formulation, administrative planning, infrastructure development, urban planning, welfare delivery and equitable resource allocation.

For assistance or queries, a 24×7 Census Control Room has been established at the Office of the Principal Census Officer (Urban), Srinagar, with contact numbers provided for support.

Officials have described the exercise as a civic responsibility, emphasising that public participation is crucial in shaping evidence-based policies for the future.
