
Srinagar: A padyatra under the banner of “Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir” was organised at Villgam in Handwara area of Kupwara district on Tuesday, drawing participation from officials, students and local residents as part of efforts to intensify awareness against drug abuse.
The march was flagged off in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Kupwara and Senior Superintendent of Police Handwara, alongside senior functionaries from the police and civil administration. A sizeable number of youth, students and members from various sections of society joined the rally.
The padyatra began from Villgam and moved through adjoining localities, with participants carrying placards and raising slogans against substance abuse while calling for collective action to curb the growing menace.
Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner stressed the need for sustained public involvement in tackling drug addiction, stating that awareness initiatives at the grassroots level are critical to sensitising the younger population. He urged parents, educators and local representatives to play an active role in guiding youth towards constructive engagement.
The SSP Handwara reiterated the police department’s resolve to counter drug trafficking, asserting that stringent action would continue against those involved in narcotics-related offences. He also called for greater public cooperation in sharing information to dismantle such networks.
Other officials highlighted the wider social and economic implications of substance abuse and underscored the importance of a coordinated response involving administration, law enforcement and civil society.
The programme concluded with participants taking a pledge to support the “Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir” campaign and to promote awareness within their respective areas. (via. Sheikh Adnan)
