Jammu: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Wednesday issued a stern warning to government employees against engaging in political activity or working for select individuals while bypassing elected representatives, saying such conduct could invite strict action.
Speaking to reporters, the Deputy Chief Minister said employees must recognise that Members of the Legislative Assembly hold constitutional positions and are part of the government. He said failure to coordinate with MLAs reflects disregard for the constitutional framework.
He said the government does not take action against employees lightly, but stressed that officials are working under an elected dispensation led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He said employees are duty bound to respond when MLAs raise issues related to public service delivery.
Choudhary alleged that some employees were indulging in politics, avoiding coordination with MLAs and the public, and aligning themselves with a few selected individuals. He said the government does not need flatterers and expects delivery on the ground.
He said action taken so far has been against officers who engage in flattery rather than work, while sincere and hardworking officers have been appreciated internally. He said the government wants officers who deliver results at the field level.
The Deputy Chief Minister acknowledged the efforts of departments in recent weeks, citing prompt road clearance, restoration of electricity, and ongoing work to improve water supply. He said shortcomings remain, but added that the administration is active and responsive.
He said the government remains committed to the assurances made during elections and aims to stay accessible and responsive to public concerns.
