SRINAGAR: The Meteorological Department on Tuesday said that a Western Disturbance is currently affecting several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, bringing cloudy conditions, gusty winds and scattered rainfall, with unstable weather likely to continue till May 14.
Director Meteorological Department, Ladakh, Sonam Lotus said intermittent rain and thunderstorm activity is expected over the next two days, although no prolonged or continuous spell of rainfall is forecast.
“The weather activity will remain scattered in nature, but instability is likely to continue till May 14,” he told Kashmir Life, adding that weather conditions are expected to improve after May 14.
Commenting on the recent incidents of hailstorms, lightning strikes and cloudbursts reported from various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Sonam Lotus said Western Disturbances frequently affect the region between March and May, bringing moisture, strong winds, rainfall, hailstorms and occasional lightning activity.
He said such extreme weather events are common in hilly areas, but added that meteorologists cannot accurately predict the exact location of a cloudburst.
Meanwhile, the MeT Department has advised farmers to suspend agricultural and farming activities till May 14 due to the possibility of thunderstorms, gusty winds and other adverse weather conditions.
The department also warned that the prevailing weather system could lead to a considerable fall in temperatures, particularly in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir. Residents and tourists travelling to mountainous areas have been urged to remain cautious and follow official advisories.
