SRINAGAR: The District Magistrate Doda has imposed a ban on unauthorized assemblies under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), amid reports that recently released MLA Doda Mehraj Malik, along with hundreds of supporters, was on his way to the main town of the district.
According to an order issued by District Magistrate Krishan Lal (JKAS), the administration observed that some people were planning demonstrations and attempting to attract gatherings, raising apprehensions of public disturbance and threats to peace and safety.
The order stated that unlawful gatherings were being planned at Clock Tower Chowk near SSP Office Doda, the road leading to Sports Stadium, the Stadium area up to Akramabad, and from Clock Tower up to the old Bus Stand.
Invoking powers under Section 163 BNSS, the District Magistrate ordered a complete ban on any unauthorized gathering of five or more persons, as well as protests or dharnas in the notified public areas.
The restrictions include Clock Tower Chowk, Dessa Road up to Akramabad, Sports Stadium, an area within a 100-metre radius of JK Sports Stadium Doda, and the stretch from Clock Tower to Old Bus Stand, except for events already granted prior permission.
The order said Senior Superintendent of Police Doda would implement the directions strictly, adding that violators would be booked under Section 223 of the BNSS, 2023.
As individual service of notice was not possible, the order was issued ex-parte and directed to be publicised through newspapers, the district website, and by affixing copies at key government offices.
The restrictions came into force on May 3, 2026, and shall remain in effect for a period of two months from the date of issuance.
The development comes at a time when political activity has intensified in Doda following the release of MLA Mehraj Malik, with a large number of supporters reportedly accompanying him towards the district. (KDC)
