
SRINAGAR: Police in central Kashmir’s Budgam have registered a criminal case against an individual for allegedly operating a fake WhatsApp account in the name of the district’s Superintendent of Police (SSP and posing as his close aide to influence people, officials said on Tuesday.
Police said reliable information was received that Sameer Ali Bhat, son of Ghulam Muhammad Bhat, a resident of Pallar Budgam, was sharing screenshots of chats with a fake WhatsApp account operating under the name of SSP Budgam.
“Upon verification, it was found that Bhat is already involved in multiple FIRs. He was operating the fake WhatsApp account using mobile number +91-9622126997 and sharing screenshots of conversations to project himself as a close associate of the SSP to gain undue influence,” official said.
Acting swiftly on the information, Police Station Budgam registered FIR No. 90/2026 under Section 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66-C of the Information Technology Act.
Budgam Police have advised the general public to remain vigilant and not fall prey to such impersonation attempts. Citizens have been urged to use only officially published contact numbers available on the police department’s website to reach authorities.
“People are requested to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station promptly for timely legal action,” the official added. (KNS)
