SRINAGAR: Police in central Kashmir’s Budgam district have arrested a man accused in a rape case registered in 1987, bringing a nearly 39-year-old pending case back into focus.

The accused, identified as Bashir Ahmad Ganaie, a resident of Drer Kalipora Shopian and presently living in Kulgam, was wanted in FIR No. 237/1987 registered at Police Station Budgam under Sections 366 and 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code.

Police said the accused had been evading arrest since the case was filed. He was apprehended during a targeted operation conducted by a team of Police Station Budgam based on specific inputs.

Officials confirmed that the arrest marks the breakthrough in a decades-old case that remained unresolved for nearly four decades.

The accused has been taken into custody, and further legal proceedings will continue as per law. Sections 366 and 376 of the Ranbir Penal Code pertain to kidnapping or abducting a woman to compel marriage or illicit intercourse, and rape, respectively.
