Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be on a two-day visit of the cold desert region of Ladakh from April 30. Alongside came the news that the ministry of home affairs’ subcommittee shall be holding political dialogue with the representatives of Ladakh to address all the issues that have emerged in the recent times.
Both pieces of big-time news were broadcasted by Ladakh’s new Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena after a gap of hours from each other. This is good news for Ladakh as it holds several promises for the people of the region who had been waiting for these big moments for long.
It is going to be first visit of the Home Minister to Ladakh ever since the state of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized under the J&K Reorganization Act in 2019 and J&K and Ladakh became two separate union territories. The difference was quite striking. Ladakh had got the UT, which it had been asking for decades. The Modi government had told them that such a status was possible only with the removal of Article 370 from the constitution of the country.
Amit Shah had piloted the amendment to scrap Article 370 and Reorganize the erstwhile state into two Union territories .The announcement was greeted with celebratory bursting of crackers and rallies in Buddhist dominated parts of Ladakh, the response in Shia Muslim dominated Kargil district, however, was muted.
For most of the remaining part of 2019 after the abrogation of Article 370, the Centre, primarily the ministry of home affairs, was busy in ensuring that Kashmir stayed calm. It had inducted forces and also taken some of extraordinary preventive measures to ensure that not even a single bullet is fired and no one is hurt. Home Minister Amit Shah supervised and monitored the whole thing. His measures helped in restoring peace to Kashmir that it had been waiting for decades of terror and turmoil. Next year began with Covid and that continued well into 2022.
Ladakh was also busy with the a situation created by Chinese troops along LAC , a military standoff that lasted until October 2024 and was resolved with Prime Minister Modi’s dialogue and diplomacy mantra . Now the things have stabilized on the border, but an unfortunate incident took place in September 2025 when four youth died in rioting. That situation is being handled and the home ministry, in its gesture aimed at trust-building released Sonam Wangchuk, a leader of the agitation after revoking National Security Act provisions under which he was booked.
Now, when Home Minister is visiting Ladakh from April 30, and next day – May 1, he will pay respects to the holy relics of Lord Buddha on the occasion of Buddh Purnima and “share his thoughts with on the spiritual significance of the sacred exposition being held in Ladakh from May 1-14,” said LG Saxena in his post on X.
LG also heighted that Home Minister’s visit underscores the commitment of Government of India for the development of Ladakh
Ladakh is a land of Buddhist monastery, and the arrival of Home Minister for the exposition of the Buddha relics is a big occasion and it has the potential to serve as a milestone for the region and the rest of the nation. The patriotism of the people of Ladakh is complete . They have always sided with the Indian Army during conflicts with China and Pakistan. They always displayed their commitment to the Indian nation, and their demand for UT was also driven by that, as they were feeling uncomfortable with the secessionism that had erupted in Kashmir. Amit Shah is the face in the Modi government, for the grant of the UT to Ladakh.
Within hours of announcing the forthcoming visit of the Home Minister, LG Saxena shared another piece of news that a subcommittee of the MHA will be holding political dialogue with the representatives of Ladakh n May 22. This is reference to the local leaders as also to the two formal groups Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance .
The announcement has been welcomed by one and all in the region and a big welcome is awaiting the Home Minister in Ladakh . The preparations have started already.
