Srinagar: The University of Kashmir on Thursday concluded its week-long Seva Parv celebrations with a solemn tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on 156th birth anniversary.
The celebrations, which began on September 17, culminated at the University’s main campus with a series of activities highlighting Gandhian ideals of truth, non-violence and selfless service.
The valedictory function was presided over by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nilofer Khan, who unveiled wall paintings created by the students of Shri Pran Kishore Koul Institute of Music and Fine Arts (IMFA). Senior faculty members including Dean Students’ Welfare, Prof. Parvez Ahmed, Controller of Examinations, Prof. Majid-uz-Zaman; Provost Boys, Prof. Mehraj-ud-Din, Principal IMFA, Dr. Habeeb Ullah; Cultural Officer, Dr. Shahid Ali Khan, hostel wardens and a large gathering of students joined the Vice Chancellor in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi.
In her address, Prof. Nilofer Khan said the University, like the rest of the country, had participated in the festival of service with great zeal. “On the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Ji, we conclude this celebration, but with renewed responsibility to live by his philosophy. Gandhi Ji’s message of selfless service and truth will continue to inspire generations,” she observed, adding that the students’ creativity and volunteerism reflect their commitment to Gandhian values.
Earlier, Dean Students’ Welfare, Prof. Parvez Ahmed, in his welcome address, said Seva Parv was an opportunity to instill in youth the values of empathy, responsibility and collective progress. Controller of Examinations, Prof. Majid-uz-Zaman, underlined the growing relevance of Gandhian ideals in contemporary times. “Through Seva, we not only honour his legacy but also strengthen our own commitment towards humanity and nation-building,” he said.
The event witnessed the participation of more than 200 students. Members of the University Literary Club, Aliya Ali, Barha Malik, Jarooza, and Tazeen, delivered speeches on the theme “Gandhian Vision of Seva: Relevance in Today’s World”, stressing the need for simplicity, kindness and collective service. A cultural programme by IMFA students on “Service as a Celebration of Humanity” also drew appreciation from the audience.
Outstanding participants were felicitated with trophies and mementoes for their contributions during the celebrations. Cultural Officer Dr. Shahid Ali Khan proposed a vote of thanks, lauding the support of all stakeholders and urging students to carry forward Gandhian philosophy.
Various University units including the Central Library, Department of Home Science, Department of Social Work, NSS Wing, University Hostels, Landscape Division, Chief Proctor’s Wing, Directorate of Lifelong Learning, Satellite Campuses and the University Model School actively contributed to the initiative, ensuring its success.
The celebrations, officials said, reflected the University’s resolve to translate the philosophy of Seva into meaningful action and to promote a culture of responsibility, service and compassion in both academic and social spheres.
