Srinagar: The ruling Omar Abdullah-led National Conference on Monday dismissed reports suggesting that Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was denied access to the main sanctum of the Hazratbal shrine.
Responding to a story carried by The Telegraph, NC spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar termed the claims “fake news” and accused the BJP of pushing a misleading narrative.
“Fake news. @OmarAbdullah Sb is the CM of J&K and no one can stop him from entering the Sanctum Sanctorum of Dargah Hazratbal,” Dar wrote on X, urging The Telegraph India to “ascertain facts before putting the questionable version out in public domain and not fall to BJP propaganda.”
The Telegraph had reported that during a recent visit to review arrangements for the ongoing Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi festival, Omar Abdullah could only look inside the under-construction main hall through glass panels, as the shrine has been undergoing renovation for the past eight months. The report further noted that daily prayers are currently being held in a side hall and that entry into the main hall is restricted until its planned inauguration.
Eyewitnesses quoted in the report said Omar, accompanied by senior officers, was received at the shrine by Waqf Board Chairperson Darakhshan Andrabi, a BJP leader, who presented him with a bouquet. They added he was “politely told” that nobody, including him, was allowed to enter the main hall before its formal reopening.
Rejecting these accounts, the NC clarified that Omar Abdullah’s access to the Hazratbal sanctum has “never been blocked” and accused political opponents of attempting to distort facts for propaganda.
The party urged the media to cross-check facts before amplifying unverified reports, stressing that such narratives only serve to “fuel divisive politics.”
