Srinagar, Aug 27: With parts of Jammu and Kashmir reeling under the impact of relentless rains and landslides, the J&K Police has been placed on alert to deal with the situation.

Authorities have intensified rescue and relief operations, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas, amid growing concerns of flooding in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions.

In multiple districts, including Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Baramulla, Doda, Reasi, Kishtwar, and Ramban, Police personnel have been deployed round the clock to provide aid to stranded civilians, manage traffic on blocked highways, and coordinate evacuations from flood-prone zones.

“We are working in close coordination with civil administration and disaster response forces to ensure the safety of our people,” a senior J&K Police officer said. “All district Police units have been directed to remain on maximum alert. We are providing logistical support, evacuating residents, and ensuring supplies reach the affected.”

Special Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and Mountain Rescue Teams (MRTs) have been mobilised in hilly regions where landslides have blocked roads and cut off access to remote villages.

Police also assisted in shifting families from vulnerable riverbank areas to safer locations.

“Police teams were the first responders when flash floods hit several areas in south Kashmir. We rescued scores of individuals from flooded hamlet areas last night. Relief materials, including food and medicines, were rushed early this morning.”

In the Jammu region, particularly in Reasi and Udhampur, Police are helping clear debris, manage diverted traffic, and offer emergency shelter support.

Efforts are also being made to track missing pilgrims following the devastating landslide near Adh Kunwari on the Vaishno Devi trek route, which claimed over 32 lives on Tuesday.

“We are using drone surveillance in landslide-affected zones and flood-prone riverbanks to monitor water levels and locate any stranded persons,” the officer said.

The collapse of mobile networks and internet connectivity has posed serious challenges to emergency operations.

However, Police have set up temporary wireless stations and are coordinating through alternative channels like satellite phones and police radio.

“Despite communication breakdowns, our ground teams are continuously patrolling. Helplines are active in most district headquarters. If you are in need of help, contact your nearest police station or checkpoint. We are committed to safeguarding every life,” a Police officer said.

With rivers like Jhelum, Tawi, and Chenab running close to or above danger marks, the Police, in tandem with the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, issued advisories for residents living near embankments.

“People are advised to avoid venturing near rivers and streams. Fishermen and boat operators must suspend all activities. We are appealing to the public to cooperate with evacuation orders and not spread or believe in rumours,” another Police officer said.

Relief camps established with the help of the district administration and local volunteers are being guarded and supported by Police personnel to ensure safety and smooth distribution of essentials.

The J&K Police has activated emergency control rooms at district headquarters and shared helpline numbers through official social media handles.

Authorities continue to urge residents to follow official advisories and refrain from spreading unverified information.
