Srinagar, Aug 14: In a story of perseverance and passion, 23-year-old Saqib Naseer from Dalgate, Srinagar, has been chosen to represent India at the Oslo 2025 Homeless World Cup, to be held from August 23 to August 30 at Rådhusplassen (City Hall Square) in Norway.

The global event will see 63 teams from 48 member countries compete in a high-energy, 4-a-side football format aimed at empowering players from socially and economically marginalised backgrounds.

Saqib’s selection came after a rigorous, all-India trial process conducted by Slum Soccer, which drew participants from every corner of the country. Out of hundreds of aspirants, only eight players made it into the final squad—and Saqib is the sole representative from Jammu and Kashmir.

Currently stationed in Nagpur, Saqib is undergoing an intensive pre-tournament training camp at the Slum Soccer KVSN Academy. The camp focuses on improving speed, endurance, and tactical awareness—crucial for the fast-paced 4-a-side format of the Homeless World Cup.

Speaking to Greater Kashmir from Nagpur, Saqib recalled the years of dedication that led him here. “This is not just a football tournament—it’s a turning point in my life. Coming from Dalgate, I had limited access to professional training facilities. There were times when I had to juggle academics, part-time work, and practice, often on uneven ground and in all weather conditions. But the love for football kept me going. Today, I am not just representing myself; I am representing every young Kashmiri who dares to dream despite the odds,” he said with visible emotion.

A B.Tech Computer Science student at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Saqib’s journey began at the Pologround Football Academy in Srinagar. The academy played a pivotal role in honing his skills, instilling discipline, and introducing him to competitive football.

“The academy gave me a platform and a sense of belonging.Head PFA Faiz Ahmad Bakshi pushed me to levels I never thought I could reach. The trip to Norway is partially sponsored by the organisers, but without the support of my coach and local well-wishers, it wouldn’t have been possible. Every contribution, no matter how small, has brought me closer to my dream,” Saqib said.

Faiz Ahmad Bakshi, founder and head of Pologround Football Academy, described Saqib as a model of commitment and grit.

“At Pologround Academy, we currently train over 150 young players entirely free of cost because we believe talent shouldn’t be restricted by financial barriers. Our mission has been to produce players who can stand tall on national and international platforms, and Saqib’s achievement is proof that this approach works,” Bakshi said.

Bakshi added that the academy’s vision goes beyond producing professional athletes. “We want to shape individuals who can inspire their communities. Saqib’s participation in the Homeless World Cup is not only a win for him but for Kashmir as a whole. It shows the world that our youth can shine if given the opportunity,” he noted.

The Homeless World Cup is more than just a sporting event—it is a movement that uses football as a catalyst for change, helping participants rebuild their lives, gain confidence, and connect with people from across the globe.

As the tournament approaches, Saqib’s focus remains unwavering.

“When I step onto the pitch in Norway, I will carry the dreams of my family, my coaches, my teammates, and my entire state. My goal is simple—play my heart out, make my country proud, and show every young Kashmiri that no dream is too big if you’re willing to work for it,” he said.

From the streets of Dalgate to the world stage in Oslo, Saqib Naseer’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, community support, and the unifying spirit of football.
