Heavy rains pound Jammu region; schools remain closed

Torrential rains pounded several districts of Jammu region, triggering flash floods, landslides, and mudslides that damaged property, blocked roads, and forced the closure of schools, officials said on Tuesday.

Authorities in Rajouri, Reasi, and Poonch districts ordered all schools shut due to adverse weather conditions. Between 8:30 a.m. Monday and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Meteorological Department recorded 280.5 mm of rain in Reasi, 148 mm in Kathua, and 96 mm each in Samba and Jammu.

The downpour caused widespread disruption, though no casualties were reported. In Surankote, Poonch district, a flash flood during the night of August 11–12 destroyed part of a high school, sweeping away a 200-foot shed and a sports room containing all records and equipment. In Rajouri’s Jaglanoo village, a cowshed collapsed, killing livestock and causing property loss.

Road networks across the region were severely affected. In Reasi, a landslide at Kandamorh in Tehsil Pouni blocked the road, while in Rajouri, the Kotranka–Khawas road was shut at Kanja. The Rajouri–Thanamandi–Surankote road was closed due to a landslide between DKG and Bufliyaz, and debris blocked several points on the Ghambir Mughlan–Thanamandi road, including Bhattian Morh. The Jammu–Srinagar highway saw traffic jams at Jagti after floodwaters inundated the road.

Rising water levels in rivers and streams have heightened the risk. The Chenab River in Reasi washed away a key road section at Gupt Kashi. Authorities have issued alerts urging residents to avoid water bodies.

The MeT Department has forecast rain and thunderstorms across the Jammu division from August 12–15, with heavy showers possible in some areas. A red warning is in effect for Udhampur, Reasi, Jammu, Samba, and Kathua, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, winds above 60 kmph in gusts, and rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour.
