Srinagar: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that India will be subject to a 25% tariff starting August 1, citing what he described as excessive trade barriers and India’s continued defense and energy ties with Russia.
In a statement posted on his social media platform, Trump emphasized that while India is considered a friend of the United States, trade relations have remained limited due to what he called “strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers” and “some of the highest tariffs in the world.”
He further pointed out India’s long-standing defense purchases from Russia and its status as one of Russia’s largest energy buyers, alongside China, at a time when there is global pressure to end the war in Ukraine. Trump labeled these developments as “all things not good.”
As a result, he declared that a 25% tariff would be imposed on Indian imports, along with an additional penalty, beginning August 1. The move is expected to mark a significant shift in U.S.-India trade policy.
