Plantation drive at SSM College of Engineering marks World Environment Day

Srinagar, Jun 6: To commemorate World Environment Day 2026, SSM College of Engineering, in collaboration with the J&K Forest Department and the Students’ Council, organized a vibrant plantation drive on 06 June 2026 within the college campus. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, staff, and officials of the Forest Department, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and ecological conservation.

The programme was attended by officials from the Forest Division Tangmarg, including In-charge Range Officer Pattan, Riyaz Ahmad Sofi, along with his team from the J&K Forest Department. Their presence added significance to the observance of World Environment Day and reinforced the importance of collaborative efforts in environmental protection. The primary objective of the drive was to create awareness about the importance of tree plantation and its crucial role in maintaining a healthy and balanced ecosystem. Students from various departments actively participated in planting saplings across the campus, contributing to the enhancement of green cover and promoting a culture of environmental responsibility. The Forest Department provided saplings for plantation on the occasion, supporting the initiative aimed at fostering environmental stewardship among the youth.

The event was inaugurated by Prof (Dr.) N. A. Shah, Registrar of the Institute, who highlighted the significance of environmental preservation and sustainable development. Addressing the participants, he emphasized that planting trees is not merely an activity but a long-term responsibility. He urged students to take ownership of the saplings they planted and ensure their proper care and protection.

The programme also focused on generating awareness among students regarding the importance of World Environment Day and the role of the community in curbing environmental pollution in general and air pollution in particular. Participants were encouraged to adopt environmentally responsible practices and contribute actively towards a cleaner and greener society.

A large gathering of students, faculty members, and senior functionaries participated in the event. On this occasion, saplings provided by the Forest Department were planted across the campus as part of the environmental conservation campaign. A rally was also organized to spread awareness and strengthen the collective resolve towards combating environmental pollution and promoting sustainable environmental practices.
The plantation drive concluded successfully with renewed enthusiasm among participants and a strengthened commitment to environmental conservation. The event served as a meaningful reminder of the collective responsibility to protect nature and build a sustainable future for generations to come.
