SRINAGAR: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Monday issued a heatwave advisory for residents as temperatures in the city are expected to rise up to 45°C, prompting authorities to urge people, particularly children and elderly citizens, to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during peak daytime hours.
The advisory comes amid intensifying summer conditions in the winter capital, with officials warning that prolonged exposure to extreme heat may lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses.
Authorities said water sprinkling vehicles have been deployed across several parts of the city to spray water on roads in an effort to reduce surface temperatures and provide temporary relief to commuters and pedestrians.
Residents have been advised to remain well-hydrated, avoid outdoor activity between late morning and afternoon hours unless necessary, and take precautions such as wearing light cotton clothing and using head coverings or umbrellas when outside.
The civic body also advised proper ventilation of homes and regular intake of fluids, including water and other hydrating drinks, to prevent dehydration during extreme weather conditions.
Special caution has been advised for vulnerable groups, including children, elderly persons and those with underlying health conditions, with families urged to avoid prolonged exposure of such individuals to outdoor heat.
JMC further warned against leaving children or elderly persons inside parked vehicles, noting that temperatures inside enclosed vehicles can rise rapidly under current conditions.
Field staff and sanitation workers engaged in outdoor duties have also been instructed to take precautionary measures, including regular hydration breaks.
The public has been urged to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, weakness or breathing difficulties develop during exposure to high temperatures.
