Handwara: In a major show of public awareness and community mobilisation, Handwara on Friday witnessed a massive turnout of over 20,000 people in a Padh Yatra organised under the ongoing anti-drug campaign, Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan.

The event was jointly organised by Handwara Police and the civil administration, drawing participation from a broad cross-section of society, including students, youth, traders, civil society members, and government officials.

The march commenced from T-Junction Chotipora and proceeded through Hospital Road and Main Chowk before culminating at Degree College Handwara. Participants carried placards and raised anti-drug slogans, spreading a strong message against substance abuse and advocating for a healthier, drug-free society.

What began as a symbolic outreach programme evolved into a large-scale public movement, reflecting growing community concern over the menace of drug abuse. The initiative aimed to sensitise people—particularly the youth—about the harmful effects of narcotics and encourage responsible social behaviour.

Officials from the police and civil administration highlighted the importance of sustained awareness campaigns and community engagement in tackling drug-related issues. They reiterated their commitment to continuing such initiatives alongside enforcement measures as part of the broader anti-drug strategy.

The programme concluded at Degree College Handwara, where participants pledged to contribute actively towards eliminating drug abuse and act as advocates for a drug-free society.

Authorities urged continued public cooperation, emphasising that collective action remains key to achieving the goal of a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir. (via. Sheikh Adnan)
