SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday informed the Legislative Assembly that over 21,000 households in Baramulla district are either partially connected to drinking water schemes or dependent on tanker supply, while ruling out any time-bound plan for round-the-clock water supply in the town.
In a written reply to National Conference MLA Javid Hassan Baig, the government said 1.29 lakh rural households and 23,298 town households have received functional tap connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). However, areas including Zithen, Waripora, Namblan, Sheeri, Mirgund and parts of Delina remain uncovered.
“Approximately 21,000 households in these areas are either partially connected or are being supplied water through tanker services. These areas shall be covered fully once JJM funds are made available, as the schemes remain incomplete due to paucity of funds,” the reply said.
The government denied repeated failure of water supply schemes in Baramulla town, stating that power outages cause temporary disruptions. It added that the River Jhelum, the main source, has sufficient discharge.
To a query on a time-bound plan for 24×7 safe drinking water, the government said “no such proposal is under consideration.”
The government also informed that out of 229 rural JJM schemes and one AMRUT-2.0 scheme for the town, only 110 have been completed so far. The total installed water treatment capacity is 29.7155 MGD. (KNS)
