SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday called for the release of prisoners ahead of Eid, describing it as a first confidence-building measure and a step towards reconciliation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a gathering at Sher-e-Kashmir Park in Srinagar, Mufti said the Union Government in New Delhi must listen to the voices of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. She stressed that the resolution of the Kashmir issue lies in dialogue and within the framework of the Constitution, adding that her party believes in engagement and peaceful talks.

Mufti also said that Pakistan must respond positively to India’s outreach efforts, referring to past attempts to improve bilateral relations. She stated that while efforts had been made to initiate dialogue, the response from across the border had not been encouraging.

Appealing to the Prime Minister, she said development initiatives alone were not sufficient. She added that meaningful dialogue could position him as a statesman of peace in the region and South Asia, and that peace in Kashmir could serve as a model for broader stability.

The PDP chief further said the prevailing atmosphere of fear and silence in the Valley must end, adding that young people deserve dignity and hope. She also remarked that calls for peace should be reflected through concrete steps on the ground.

Calling for the release of detainees ahead of Eid, Mufti said such a move would serve as a strong confidence-building measure and send a message of reconciliation and healing to the people of the region.
