Jammu Kashmir Reports 146 Zero-Enrolment Government Schools in 2024-25 | Kashmir Life

SRINAGAR: Jammu Kashmir has seen a sharp rise in government schools with zero student enrolment, according to data tabled in the Rajya Sabha on 18 March 2026 in response to MP Pramod Tiwari’s unstarred question.

The figures show that 65 schools had zero enrolment in 2023-24, which surged to 146 schools in 2024-25. These schools still have 61 teachers posted, highlighting underutilized educational resources.

The data also reflects the year-on-year number of government schools in the Union Territory: 23,167 in 2020-21, 23,173 in 2021-22, dropping to 18,785 in 2022-23 and remaining at 18,785 through 2024-25.

Officials note that while the overall number of schools has decreased due to consolidation or closures, the rising zero-enrolment figures indicate persistent challenges in student access and attendance in certain areas. The figures are drawn from UDISE+, the national educational database.
