Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message to the world in this hour of grave crisis arising out of the Middle East conflict is clear and consistent; go in for dialogue and diplomacy to end the hostilities. That is statesmanship at a time when the world is horrified by the explosions, loss of thousands of lives and worse still attacks on infrastructure.
It is only leader like Modi who can speak to the leaders of the two major countries involved in the conflict – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ( March 1) and Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian ( March 12) to discuss the current situation that has not only rattled the countries involved in the conflict but also rattled the rest of the world . The worst kind of scenarios is being painted all across.
At this moment, someone has to stand for peace in a fair manner. Prime Minister Modi has filled this gap. He stands for peace and has been advocating for peace being given a chance .That’s what he has been telling various leaders across the countries. The world knows where to look peace guidelines in these difficult times.
On Thursday (March 12) evening, he silenced all his critics who had been questioning his silence vis-à-vis Iran. He spoke to the Iranian president, and discussed the “serious situation in the region. He expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions and the loss of civilian lives as well as damage to civilian infrastructure”
In his post on X, PM Mode wrote :” The safety and security of Indian nationals, along with the need for unhindered transit of goods and energy, remain India’s top priorities. Reiterated India’s commitment to peace and stability and urged for dialogue and diplomacy.”
His critics had been pointing out why India was not taking a position on Iran which was the first country to be hit by the joint US-Israeli strikes on February 28, 2026, in which supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed, fuelling the crisis all across the Muslim world. Iran launched strikes at Israel and the US assets in the Gulf States.
They were made t to face the mirror when Prime Minister discussed and showed the pathway to cessation of hostilities. His message to the Iranian President Pezeshkian had deeper meaning than what some may think. Its profoundness can be gauged by the range of issues discussed by the two leaders on phone. This presented a canvas of the whole situation, which is grim and threatening. The world peace perhaps was never before under threat so much in the 21st century.
The war has created an unprecedented energy crisis in the world, especially the countries that shop their oil from Gulf States and Hormuz strait .Hormuz Strait alone accounts for 20 per cent of the world energy supplies.
Prime Minister was speaking for the world, not just for India. That requires tremendous courage of a leader like Modi who stands for the world peace in these extraordinarily difficult times. He has already spoken to all heads of the states of the Gulf countries.
His message to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was same when he spoke to him on March 1. He discussed with his Israeli counterpart the situation, and conveyed “India’s concerns over the recent developments (That is what happened on February 28 and the Iranian retaliation) and emphasized the safety of civilians as a priority “He reiterated India‘s stand that there was a need for an early cessation of hostilities.
In principle and practical reality, there are two issues involved as far as India is concerned; the safety of more than 10 million Indians residing or working in the Gulf States which are being hit by Iranian missiles in retaliation t Israeli strikes on the Iranian cities defense establishments. Second, India by its own conviction and devotion to peace wants the world to get rid of the turbulences.
India with a population of more than 1.40 billion cannot watch the things going astray as it would impact the post second world war order . India has to assume a role and that is what Prime Minister has done. He is urging the countries involved in the conflict, at the same time he is telling them that how could the world suffer from consequences of this ongoing conflict.
