SRINAGAR: Heightened security remained in place in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk and other areas of Kashmir for the second day on Tuesday, a day after members of the Shia Muslim community held protests condemning the killing of a top Iranian leader.

Officials sources said that security forces continued to maintain a strong presence across the valley as a precautionary measure to ensure law and order remains undisturbed. The protests on Monday were held in response to the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in airstrikes carried out by US and Israeli forces.

Tensions arose briefly on Monday when a protest by the community near the UNO office in Srinagar led to a minor confrontation. Police intervened to calmly disperse the crowd, and officials later described the overall situation as largely peaceful and under control.

Protesters on Monday carried portraits of Ayatollah Khamenei and banners expressing solidarity with Iran. The community also observed traditional mourning rituals, including the recitation of Nauha and the display of black flags. Similar gatherings by members of the Shia community were also reported in other parts of the country.

Meanwhile, reports said business activity was back on track across Kashmir on Tuesday, with transport plying on all major routes.

On Monday, political leaders, the civil administration, and the police had appealed to the public to maintain a calm and peaceful environment. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. (KNS)
