SRINAGAR: Srinagar Police has registered a case against individuals and media platforms accused of circulating false and misleading information aimed at disturbing public order.

In a statement, police said they had taken “serious cognisance” of the alleged dissemination of fabricated and unverified content across electronic and social media platforms. The material, according to the statement, was intended to incite unrest and create disharmony in society.

An FIR, numbered 01/2026, has been lodged at the Cyber Police Station under relevant legal provisions. Police said several online profiles had been identified and the individuals concerned summoned to the Cyber Cell for questioning. An investigation is under way, and authorities indicated that legal action would follow against those found responsible.

The police warned that sharing fake news, inflammatory material or unverified information would attract stringent legal consequences. Citizens and media organisations were urged to verify facts through official and credible sources before publishing or circulating content that could affect communal harmony or public order.

Police reiterated that maintaining law and order remains a priority and that any attempt to disrupt peace in the region would be dealt with firmly.
