SRINAGAR: Jammu Kashmir born Kolkata Knight Riders pacer Umran Malik struggled in the DY Patil T20 Cup, conceding 59 runs in two overs while playing for Tata Sports Club against Mumbai Customs.

Jammu cricketer Umran Malik is right now the fastest bowler in India

Defending a total of 193, Umran opened the bowling with captain Shardul Thakur. After Thakur gave away 10 runs in the first over, Umran went for 23 in his first over, as Rugved More struck a four and three sixes.

Umran’s second over, in the 13th, proved expensive. Mumbai Customs were well-placed in their chase, and the over included a single, a boundary, a no-ball hit for six, a dot ball, a six, a four, followed by a wide, a no-ball, a free hit for four, and a six, conceding 36 runs. He finished with figures of 2 for 59 without taking a wicket.

Mumbai Customs completed the chase in 16 overs, with More scoring a 46-ball century, finishing 101 off 46 deliveries.

The performance adds to concerns for KKR ahead of IPL 2026. Umran, bought for Rs 75 lakh before the 2025 season, has struggled for consistency. In a prior match against DY Patil Red, he conceded 41 runs in four overs, including a 27-run over during the powerplay.

Umran has played 10 ODIs and eight T20Is for India, with his last international appearance in 2023. In the IPL, he has featured in 26 matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad, taking 29 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls and two four-wicket hauls.

A right-arm fast bowler from Jammu Kashmir, Umran Malik gained prominence in the 2021 IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad and made his international debut for India in 2022. Known for bowling at high speeds, he has faced challenges with control and consistency, which have affected his continuity in the national team despite being considered a promising pace talent.
