SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said the government is committed to ensuring electricity reaches every household in Jammu and Kashmir, including newly developed and remote habitations.

Responding to a question in the Legislative Assembly by Billawar MLA Satish Kumar Sharma regarding un-electrified areas in his constituency, Abdullah said that although no village in the Union Territory is completely without power, some smaller habitations or hamlets still lack electricity connections.

He noted that with population growth and the expansion of villages, electrification is an ongoing process that requires the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) before implementation.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the Power portfolio, said electrification works are being undertaken under centrally sponsored schemes as well as the UT Capex programme. DPRs for the areas highlighted by the MLA are being prepared, and efforts are continuing to ensure that no household remains without electricity.

He cited habitations such as Thingnen, Kanodi and Hanok in Panchayat Madoon/Dehota of Billawar as examples of partially electrified areas. While most households without electricity in these locations have been approved for coverage under the DA-JGUA scheme, some were excluded from the final DPR due to increased project costs.

Abdullah added that all villages in the Jammu division have been electrified either through on-grid or off-grid systems, and steps are ongoing to extend the network to new habitations under the DA-JGUA and UT Capex schemes.
