SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday said he maintains the same political position in both Delhi and Kashmir, asserting that he acknowledges the Centre’s support where it exists and speaks candidly where it has fallen short, particularly on the issue of restoration of statehood.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Omar rejected allegations of adopting different stands in different places, saying his views have remained consistent. He said he openly highlights both the assistance and the shortcomings of the central government and has repeatedly stated that the demand for statehood has not been addressed.

On statehood, the Chief Minister said the Centre has offered nothing substantive so far. He added that he would not make misleading statements to appease anyone and has raised the issue at all platforms, including official meetings, public programmes and the Assemblies in Srinagar and Jammu.

Omar also criticised the replacement of a Mahatma Gandhi-linked scheme with the G Ramji bill, saying the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name was inappropriate. He said the changes shifted responsibility to the states and would adversely affect regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, adding that several recent amendments would not benefit states like his.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said the administration has completed all necessary preparations across both Kashmir and Jammu divisions to deal with the expected snowfall. He said he had personally reviewed arrangements in areas likely to receive snow, including all districts of the Valley and the mountainous regions of Jammu.

He said the adequacy of the preparations would become clear once snowfall begins and urged people not to complain if difficulties arise, noting that the snowfall was long awaited. Omar said the spell would help reduce pollution and mark the beginning of the winter tourism season.

Besides, the Chief Minister chaired a review meeting to assess district-level preparedness, including snow clearance, power supply and essential services, expressing optimism that the snowfall would improve air quality and revive tourism activity in the Valley.
