Srinagar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) against Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
In a letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner at Nirvachan Sadan, New Delhi, the BJP candidate from Budgam alleged that the Chief Minister made a public announcement from the floor of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly regarding the setting up of temporary classes for the proposed law university. The party said the statement was a deliberate attempt to influence the electorate of Budgam by projecting imminent developmental benefits in the constituency during the election period.
The complaint argues that Omar Abdullah’s announcement constitutes a clear breach of the Model Code of Conduct, which explicitly prohibits governments and public officials from making promises or launching new projects once elections have been announced. It further contends that the statement amounts to an inducement to voters, thereby falling under the category of “undue influence” and “corrupt practice” as defined under Section 123(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The BJP has also accused the Chief Minister of misusing an official platform by making the announcement within the Assembly, thereby compromising the neutrality of the electoral process. The party stated that the remarks, which have since been widely circulated across media and social networks, have the potential to alter voter perception and disturb the level playing field in Budgam.
Seeking immediate intervention, the BJP has urged the Election Commission to conduct a prompt inquiry and take appropriate action against the Chief Minister for what it termed a serious violation of electoral norms.
