SRINAGAR: A strong earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan late on Tuesday night, sending tremors across parts of north India, including the Kashmir Valley, officials said.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 23:44:47 IST with its epicentre located 72 kilometres southeast of Fayzabad, Afghanistan, at a depth of 220 kilometres. The coordinates were recorded at 36.5546° N and 71.0004° E.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from Jammu and Kashmir.

The quake’s deep origin in Afghanistan’s mountainous region helped dissipate its intensity on the surface, though the tremors were felt widely across the northern belt of the Indian subcontinent.

The Hindukush mountain range, where the epicentre lies, is known for frequent seismic activity and has been the source of several moderate to strong earthquakes felt across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and north India.
