SRINAGAR: Twenty-five tourists were stranded for more than two hours at Sunshine Peak in Gulmarg after a private helicopter operating a joyride developed a technical fault.
All the tourists were later rescued in a joint operation carried out by the Army and the civil administration.
Officials said the tourists, who had arrived from different parts of the country, were dropped at the scenic destination, but the helicopter could not return to collect them due to the malfunction.
Following the incident, the civil administration coordinated with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Army to launch a rescue operation. On the directions of the Senior Superintendent of Police, Baramulla, a rescue team was dispatched to Phase 2 and kept ready for a possible foot evacuation, officials added.
Army helicopters later managed to land at the location and safely evacuated all the stranded tourists during a two-and-a-half-hour operation. Officials confirmed that all those rescued were brought down safely and were in good health.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah praised the swift and coordinated response of the Army and the civil administration.
