Gulmarg, Feb 23: Jammu and Kashmir Sports Minister Satish Sharma on Monday said the region will respond firmly to terrorism while continuing to promote tourism and sports as key drivers of growth.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Khelo India Winter Games 2026 in Gulmarg, Sharma said the event reflects Jammu and Kashmir’s resilience and confidence amid challenges.

Referring to the recent Pahalgam incident, the minister said such acts would not derail efforts to promote peace, tourism and youth engagement through sports.

“We are strong enough to face challenges. Tourism will thrive and sports will lead positive change,” he said.

Calling it an honour to host the sixth edition of the Games, Sharma said Gulmarg has emerged as a major winter sports hub, drawing athletes and visitors from across the country.

He said the government is investing in sports infrastructure and nurturing local talent in disciplines such as skiing and snowboarding. Winter adventure tourism, he added, is also being expanded to destinations like Sonamarg, Bhaderwah and the Pir Panjal region.

The minister said promotion of homestays in rural and high-altitude areas is being prioritised to ensure tourism benefits local communities directly.

Emphasising security and development, Sharma said Jammu and Kashmir will continue to move forward despite threats, asserting that tourism symbolises peace and progress and will play a key role in the Union Territory’s economic future. —(KNO)
